What is sunflower?
One in six people live with a disability, of which 80 % have a non-visible disability. For those, it can be challenging to be in busy and stressful environments.
To make the stay at Stuttgart Airport easier for passengers with invisible disabilities, we became member of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower in April 2025. The sunflower is an international symbol for invisible disabilities. It allows sunflower wearers to voluntarily share that they have a disability or a condition that may not be immediately apparent.
How does it work at Stuttgart Airport?
The sunflower lanyard is aimed at anyone living with a non-visible disability who may need a helping hand, empathy or simply a bit more time. The aim is to create a supportive and friendly environment for everyone at the airport. Stuttgart Airport wants to set an example of inclusion and therefore introduced the Sunflower in April 2025.
The lanyard is available at our passenger information desk in Terminal 3, Departures as well as at the SAG Boarding Support and the Airport Security (Terminal 1 west, Departures). Upon request, our employees will provide it free of charge and without further questions.
More about the SunflowerFAQ
Who is the Sunflower lanyard for?
The Sunflower lanyard is an offer for all people with a non-visible disability, condition or chronic illness. It is a way for them to voluntarily indicate that they may need more time, consideration or patience.
What are hidden disabilities?
Hidden disabilities are not immediately apparent to others and can be temporary, situational or permanent. The disability or condition can affect the nervous system, thinking and brain development. It can also affect the physical system, vision, hearing or the senses and processing of information. It therefore includes a wide range of disabilities that entail different needs and barriers for those affected.
For example:
- ADHD/ADHS
- asthma
- dementia
- dyslexia
- migraine
- Tourette's
- and much more.
Do I need to provide proof to receive the lanyard?
Individuals who need a Sunflower lanyard do not have to provide proof or disclose details about their disability. Relatives, friends, or other supporters can also receive a lanyard, because public awareness is one of the central purposes of the Sunflower.
What can I do if I see someone with a Sunflower lanyard?
Our staff is specially trained to ensure that Sunflower wearers receive the empathy and help they need. However, it is helpful if everyone at the airport is aware of the Sunflower. It is a small but valuable step if we treat each other in a friendly, patient and attentive manner. Even a brief smile or an offer to assist can make all the difference and help everyone to feel at ease when traveling.
Does the lanyard need to be returned?
No, the lanyard does not need to be returned. Besides Stuttgart Airport, it can also be worn at other locations that are a member of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower.
